Description:
As a symbol of John in Ezekiel's vision, the eagle has been known since ancient cultures as a deity and symbol of existence, health, protection, and ascension.
This gilded bronze artifact belongs to liturgical lecterns in the form of a raptor, documented from the 14th century and in wide use in the northern European Gothic period and the British region.
The formal performance of this fine sculpture is treated with almost calligraphic taste and vibrant in the rendering of the plumage and head showing characteristics peculiar to northern sculpture.
