Description:
The iconography of this work depicts the Madonna of Humility, widespread in late Gothic art and so called because instead of on a throne, the Virgin takes her place seated on the ground.
The panel was intended for private devotion and ascribed to the catalog of Florentine painter Giovanni di Tano Fei, member of the Arte dei medici e degli speziali and the Compagnia di San Luca (painters guild) of Florence from 1405.
We owe to historian Federico Zeri the composition of a catalog of the artist based on his characteristic darting and sinuous painting updated by Lorenzo Monaco's Gothic turn.
