Description:
The two marble sculptures are fragments of a funerary monument: confirmation is provided by the skull that the putto holds under his foot and that the two statues have mirror poses. In the 17th century, the sculptural prototype for the funeral commemoration echoes the innovations of Borromini and Bernini in Rome, who made fantastical and highly symbolic structures for famous commemorations.
These, too, were likely allegorical figures in a larger marble composition and embody the symbolism of the memento mori paradigm used since ancient times in works of a funerary character.
