Description:
This Pietà comes from the chapel of a noble palace in Florence. It’s a refined variant of the work now kept in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, painted by Cigoli and passed from the collection of Cardinal Carlo de' Medici in Florence.
In the composition the references to the lesson of Michelangelo are clear, mixed with a severe residual intonation of the climate of the Counter-Reformation.
The "modest humility" of Cigoli meets with references to dramatic sentimentality in the light of the new Caravaggesque atmosphere.
