Description:

Giovanni Domenico Lombardi's practice of creating "genre paintings" is referred in the chronicles of the time to his familiarity he had in painting still-lifes, landscapes, “bambocciate” and allegorical figures.

Two splendid pendant examples of allegorical genre paintings are preserved in the Luzzetti Collection: Summer and Autumn.

For Autumn, the month of festive hunting rites and the grape harvest, we find a young man dressed in hunting attire absorbed in an elegant three-quarter pose, almost with his back turned.

The severity of the man is contrasted with the cheerfulness of the putto bearing bunches of grapes, leading the symbolism of this genre scene back to an eschatological theme.
