Description:
The work is part of production by the Genoese painter Giuseppe Palmieri, who, although marked mainly toward the creation of devotional paintings, shows here that he also deals admirably with genre painting.
Still life spread to Genoa through the work of Flemish artists, such as Pieter Aertsen, thanks to the mercantile exchanges that took place between the Genoese port and that of Antwerp.
The essential composition focuses on describing the immediate and incisive human reality of fishermen's lives.
The night scene makes the painter's choice even more unique and valuable as he achieves, with brushstrokes and strokes of light, the vibrant movements of the flesh of the fish just pulled out of the water.
