Description:

Passignano was a celebrated Mannerist painter able to fuse the drawing of Tuscan painting with the color of Venetian painting.

It was in the Venetian city that he sojourned between 1582 and 1587, absorbing the painting style of the great masters, such as Titian and Giorgione, who were distinguished by their use of tonal painting.

This painting, probably made for a private chapel, reproduces the famous altarpiece that the painter made for the Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence, his greatest masterpiece, reproducing, albeit in the small format, the same monumentality.

The work is signed "Opus Dominici Passignani MDC."
