Description:
This work, emblematic of Santi di Tito's reformed painting in an anti-Mannerist sense, renounces all plastered sacredness to depict a simple, domestic, everyday scene.
Children play under the watchful and loving gaze of their mother, while behind them Joseph works in his carpenter's workshop.
Contributing to the everyday dimension, the painter inserts still-life details-the basket with scissors and the cloths at the Virgin's feet-that further bring the sacred scene closer to an earthly dimension.
Signed and dated "SANTIDI TITO FACIEBAT 1601".
