Description:
Due to a document from 1694 that mentions this work, we know that it was made by Dandini for the patron Lorenzo Grassi and that it was originally in pendant with another canvas, now unknown, depicting a "Jesus laid in the tomb."
The painter emphasizes the poignant sentimentality and intensity of pathos of the episode taken from the Book of Luke's Gospel.
The intimacy of the moment is accompanied by a feeling of composure and acceptance of Christ's dual nature, divine and human, in a nocturnal atmosphere charged with textural color effects.
Dandini combines Rubensian exuberance with the design of Tuscan painting, arriving at eclectic and fascinating painting.
